found we could duplicate the observed fraction of doublet craters found on Earth, Venus, and Mars. Our results suggest At least 10% (3 out of 28) of the largest known impact craters that any search for asteroid satellites should place emphasis on Earth and a similar fraction of all impact structures on on km-sized Earth-crossing asteroids with short-rotation Venus are doublets (i.e., have a companion crater nearby), periods. 1996 Academic Press, Inc. formed by the nearly simultaneous impact of objects of comparable size. Mars also has doublet craters, though the fraction found there is smaller (2%). These craters are too large and

Doublet craters on Venus
Of the impact craters on Earth larger than 20 km in diameter, 10–15% (3 out of 28) are doublets, having been formed by the simultaneous impact of two well-separated projectiles. The most likely scenario for their formation is the impact of well-separated binary asteroids. If a population of binary asteroids is capable of striking the Earth, it should also be able to hit the other terrestrial pl...
متن کامل1 Binary and Multiple Systems
A sizable fraction of small bodies, including roughly 15% of NEOs, is found in binary or multiple systems. Understanding the formation processes of such systems is critical to understanding the collisional and dynamical evolution of small body systems, including even dwarf planets. Binary and multiple systems provide a means of determining critical physical properties (masses, densities, and ro...

متن کاملGravitational Aggregates: Evidence and Evolution
It has been suggested that asteroids between ~100 m and ~100 km in size may be gravitational aggregates of loosely consolidated material. Recently evidence has been mounting to support this idea. Comet breakups, crater chains, doublet craters, giant craters, grooves, asteroid spins, underdense asteroids, asteroid satellites, and unusual asteroid shapes can all be explained to some degree by the...
متن کاملThe missing large impact craters on Ceres
Asteroids provide fundamental clues to the formation and evolution of planetesimals. Collisional models based on the depletion of the primordial main belt of asteroids predict 10-15 craters >400 km should have formed on Ceres, the largest object between Mars and Jupiter, over the last 4.55 Gyr. Likewise, an extrapolation from the asteroid Vesta would require at least 6-7 such basins. However, C...
